Temperature is a critical parameter in many industries. Whether the concern is food, catering, pharmaceuticals, laboratory samples, sensitive chemicals, technical components, archive materials or temperature-sensitive stored goods, a single reading says very little about what actually happened over hours, days or during transport. That is exactly why temperature data loggers are used.

They record temperature values automatically and create traceability. In practice, this is especially important for cold chain operation, incoming goods checks, storage monitoring, transport documentation, pharmacies, medical practices, hospitals, laboratories, technical test rooms, server rooms, event logistics and large-scale catering.

Why single measurements are often not enough

Manual spot checks have one basic limitation: they capture only one moment in time. In cold rooms, refrigerators, transport boxes, laboratory equipment or event logistics, deviations may occur between inspections and remain unnoticed. A logger, by contrast, shows when a temperature increased, how long it stayed outside the target range and whether the deviation was brief or systematic.

Typical application areas

In the food sector, the focus is on cold chain management, incoming goods, storage, production zones, refrigerated counters, catering and mobile food service. In pharmacies and medical environments, refrigerated storage, medicine handling and documented limit values are important. In laboratories, sample stability, incubation, storage conditions and calibratable measurement chains are central. In storage and logistics, long-term stability, load peaks, door openings and differences between locations are often the key issues.

What matters when selecting a logger?

The first priority is always the right measuring range. A logger for normal room temperature is not automatically suitable for deep-freeze applications, hot zones or laboratory processes. Accuracy, resolution, memory size, battery life, alarm function and the question of internal versus external sensors are equally important.

External probes are especially useful when measurements are needed inside cooling equipment, packaging, liquids, containers or hard-to-reach areas. It is also important to decide early how the data will be used later: is a simple USB export enough, or are long-term archiving, regular evaluation and software integration required?

Temperature only or temperature and humidity?

In many applications, temperature alone is not sufficient. In archives, museums, electronics storage, laboratory areas or high-value storage zones, humidity also plays an important role. In such cases, solutions from the temperature and humidity range are especially useful.

Standards, HACCP and industry-specific requirements

In the food sector, the HACCP concept is central. Legally, Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 on food hygiene is an important framework. For temperature recording instruments used in the transport, storage and distribution of temperature-controlled foods, DIN EN 12830 is often relevant in practice. In pharmaceutical, laboratory and medical settings, internal QA requirements, calibration concepts and documented testing processes also play a major role.
