What is a signal transmitter (messumformer)
A signal transmitter (messumformer) converts a physical quantity (e.g. current, voltage, temperature, pressure, humidity, pH, conductivity) into a standardised output signal such as 4–20 mA or 0–10 V. This standard signal can then be processed safely and with low interference by PLCs, controllers or SCADA/building management systems.

What is the difference between a 4–20 mA transmitter and a 0–10 V transmitter?
Both provide standard analogue output signals. Transmitters with a 4–20 mA output are very immune to interference and cable resistance, which is why they are widely used in process industries. 0–10 V outputs are often used in building automation and applications with shorter cable runs. Many devices can be configured for either 4–20 mA or 0–10 V.
Why do I need a transmitter for current and voltage?
Current and voltage transmitters measure AC or DC signals from loads, power supplies or measuring transformers and convert them into a standard output signal. Typical applications are energy and load monitoring, machine condition monitoring, supervision of electrical circuits and interfacing analogue electrical values to PLCs or control systems.
What does galvanic isolation mean in a transmitter and why is it important?
Galvanic isolation electrically decouples input, output and supply circuits. This reduces interference, ground loops and the risk of dangerous voltages being transferred between circuits. Especially in systems with higher voltages, long cable runs or very sensitive input cards, transmitters with galvanic isolation are an important safety and quality feature.
In which applications are pressure transmitters used?
Pressure transmitters are used for example in HVAC and ventilation systems, filter monitoring, clean room applications, water and process plants and pneumatic systems. They convert relative or differential pressure into a 4–20 mA or 0–10 V signal, enabling continuous monitoring and control of pressure in your process.
How do I choose the correct measuring range and output signal for my transmitter?
Start with the minimum and maximum process value you need to measure (e.g. temperature range, pressure range, current or voltage). The transmitter should cover this range safely without being oversized, to maintain good resolution. Then choose the output signal according to your system – typically 4–20 mA or 0–10 V. Many temperature and pressure transmitters offer configurable ranges and outputs via DIP switches or software.
Can I integrate transmitters into existing PLC or DCS systems?
Yes. Because transmitters provide standard signals such as 4–20 mA and 0–10 V, they can usually be connected very easily to existing PLC, DCS or building management systems. You only need to check that the input ranges, supply voltage and any required galvanic isolation match your existing hardware.
